The University of Cincinnati has a long and storied history dating back to 1819 when Cincinnati College and the Medical College of Ohio were established. These institutions were later absorbed into the University of Cincinnati, which was founded by the City of Cincinnati in 1870. A pioneer in cooperative education, UC created the nation’s first co-op program in 1906 through its College of Engineering. For many years, UC was the second oldest and second largest municipal university in the United States. In 1968, the university transitioned to a “municipally sponsored, state affiliated” model before becoming a full public state university in Ohio on July 1, 1977. Today, the University of Cincinnati is classified by the Carnegie Commission as a top research institution and is ranked among the top 25 public universities in America.
