Overview

The origins of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) can be traced back to 1859 when the Medical College of Alabama was established. In 1945, the college relocated from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham, expanding its curriculum to encompass a wide range of subjects. Over time, it evolved into UAB while maintaining its historical expertise in medicine and nursing. UAB offers medical students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the renowned University of Alabama Hospital at Birmingham, one of the largest and most advanced medical centres in the United States. The hospital is nationally recognized in nine adult specialties and staffed by top practitioners in the field. Beyond its focus on healthcare professions, UAB encompasses various schools in disciplines such as arts and sciences, business, engineering, and education.
Ranked as #901-950 in QS World University Rankings 2024; UAB stands out as one of the most diverse universities in the country and holds a Carnegie classification for “very high research activity.” The university encourages undergraduate involvement in research, with students showcasing their findings at the annual Undergraduate Research Expo. UAB is also recognized for its commitment to community engagement, exemplified by dentistry students providing over 500 free services to homeless individuals each year. For student entrepreneurs, UAB’s Innovation Lab (iLab), which operates under the School of Business, offers consulting, incubation, and development services to fast-track startup ideas. International students can improve their English language skills through UAB’s English language program, which offers various options for academic, professional, or general English learning.
