Celebrating Innovation and Inspiration: Dr. Iris Kramer Honoured with Purple Plaque at Southampton

Dr. Iris Kramer, founder of ArchAI and a University of Southampton alumni, is celebrated for her groundbreaking work in AI-driven sustainable land-use planning. The purple plaque, awarded by UKRI, commemorates her achievements in science and business, inspiring future generations of women in STEM and innovation.

Dr. Iris Kramer, a trailblazing University of Southampton graduate, returned to campus to unveil a purple plaque celebrating her groundbreaking contributions to science and business. The plaque, a symbol of her UKRI Women in Innovation Award, aims to inspire future generations of women in STEM.
The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) introduced purple plaques in 2022 to visibly honour women’s achievements in science, mirroring the iconic blue plaques that commemorate historical figures across the UK. Dr. Kramer’s plaque now stands proudly at the university’s Highfield Campus in Building 32, University Road.
Dr. Kramer began her academic journey studying archaeology as an undergraduate before earning her Master’s in Archaeology and a PhD in Computer Science at the University of Southampton. In 2020, she founded ArchAI, an innovative company that leverages artificial intelligence to digitise data from LiDAR, satellite imagery, and historic maps. ArchAI’s work provides critical insights into past land use, supporting sustainable land planning, habitat restoration, and conservation efforts.
Dr. Kramer collaborates with the construction industry, the Forestry Commission, the National Trust, and other organisations to promote sustainable development and environmental preservation. Reflecting on the recognition, she said:
“Receiving this plaque is a wonderful acknowledgment of ArchAI’s success so far. I’m proud that our work delivers national-scale insights previously unimaginable through traditional methods. This plaque at the University of Southampton is deeply meaningful, as it represents the incredible support I received during my academic journey. It’s a testament to the collaborative spirit that allowed me to transform my dreams into impactful projects.”
Dr. Kramer’s achievements extend beyond ArchAI. She was also featured in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2022 for her visionary leadership.
Professor Tim Norman, Head of Electronics and Computer Science, remarked: “Dr. Kramer’s work exemplifies the economic and societal benefits of innovation rooted in academic expertise. We’re proud of the university’s inclusive culture that nurtures entrepreneurship and supported Iris on her remarkable journey.”
The purple plaque is a lasting tribute to Dr. Kramer’s pioneering efforts, celebrating her as a role model for aspiring innovators and environmental advocates.
